A special friend

It's probably not too much of an exaggeration to say that most Australians have learnt more about nature from wildlife documentaries on television than they ever did during classes at school. Some of the very best of these programs have come from the BBC and have been those presented by Sir David Attenborough.
Zoo Friends took the opportunity of Sir David's visit to show its appreciation. In acknowledgement of the many hours of extraordinary images and amazing information that he has given to us, we presented him with a life membership of our Association.
Sir David has been in Australia recently, filming scenes for a series on invertebrates. He has had the assistance of Taronga Zoo's resident 'bug boy', Backyard to Bush Unit Supervisor Warrick Angus. Without giving away too many secrets, some of the best cameramen in the world have been filming the extraordinary lives of our local invertebrates - from Redback Spiders in Sydney's backyards to Feather-legged Bugs that pounce on passing ants. Warrick says some of the behaviours he has witnessed whilst making the documentary have never been captured on film before.

We hope Sir David might become a more frequent visitor to the zoo when he is in Sydney, now he is one of 'us'.
